The 2021 $1000 scholarship recipients were:
Bridget Gleason is a senior at Sandwich High School headed for Bentley University in the fall. She is a Varsity Soccer and Lacrosse Player winning many awards.
Helping to train 3 service dogs through the pup/prisoner program (NEADS) National Education for Assistance Dog Services was one of the ways she contributed to her community. The dogs were trained by inmates in a MA State prison from Monday-Friday and Bridget took them for the weekends exposing them to certain situations and stimuli. The first dog is matched with a disabled boy in CT, the second is a state of Massachusetts courthouse dog helping trauma victims, and the third is with a disabled girl in NH.
As the founder of Know Your Girl Health, she created a website for teenage girls to learn about women’s health including screening guidelines and common health issues. Taking a class with the organization Girls with Impact Entrepreneurship and Leadership Academy that teaches high school girls how to start their own businesses.
An accomplished Cello player with the Seaside String Ensemble, member of the National Honor Society, Ambassador Kindness Rocks project 2020, Cape Cod Challenger Volunteer, helping teach soccer to disabled children and adults, are just a few of Bridget’s involvements.
Her many academic awards include AP Scholar Award July 2020 given by the College Board, Massachusetts DECA District 8 Top Ten Medal for Business Management 2020, Congressional Award. Gold Medal President’s Volunteer Gold Service Award in 2017, 2019, 2021.
We are pleased to present a $1000 scholarship to Bridget Gleason.
Julia DaSilva is a senior at Arlington High School, headed to the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.
Julia is a talented ballet dancer, a volunteer at her local food pantry, a Young Feminists Alliance Leader, National Honor Society volunteer, College Board National Hispanic Recognition Program, volunteer for incoming freshmen with special needs, and recipient of Massachusetts State Seal of Bi-literacy.
As part of her school’s Global Competency Program, she researched the United Nations’ 16th sustainability development goals: peace, justice, and strong institutions. While exploring the topic, she learned that children can have developmental or behavioral issues from being exposed to racism and cultural bias. She has committed herself to alleviate the painful experience for other Latinx children who may feel marginalized due to the color of their skin, their language, their religion, or their culture. Talking to her mother who arrived stateside from Puerto Rico at 17 and learning about her difficulties inspired Julia to work to prevent this from happening to other young people.
One of her teachers tells us, “Julia’s background as a first generation immigrant has increased her awareness of the experiences of immigrants and how difficult it can be. She is very appreciative of her multilingual and multicultural Hispanic background and feels it’s made her the person she has become and will lend her strength in her life, studies, and career path. She is a talented artist, dancer and community volunteer.’
We are pleased to award a $1000 scholarship to Julia DaSilva.
Our $500 scholarship for 2021 will be presented to
Sage Leger.... a senior at Leominster High School headed to Berklee College of Music. Sage has an outstanding academic record. She is the current President of Leominster High School’s Civic Engagement club, STUMP (Students for Transparency and Understanding of Municipal Politics). They hosted a monthly town meeting with Leominster’s State representative. Sage attended every school committee meeting and reported on them to the club. This year even though the school was fully remote, the group organized two “get out the vote” events, a Town Hall with the principal to discuss challenges with remote learning, and a group of volunteers to work at the polls for both the primary and general elections. Sage spoke at a School Committee meeting to advocate for a non-voting student member to sit on the committee.
One of her teachers says, “Sage is a smart, talented, and personable young lady who has the ability to change vocal and music styles to put her own take on any genre of music. Her passion for music has been clear from the first time we met.” Sage will be pursuing a career in Music Production.
We are pleased to award Sage Leger a $500 scholarship.
We can be very proud of ALL our students!
